How to Create a Forward-Reverse Power Diagram in AutoCAD Electrical

Hey there, electrical enthusiasts! Welcome to Easy Electra, where we simplify electrical and automation concepts for you. Today, we’re diving into AutoCAD Electrical to design a Forward-Reverse Power Diagram step by step.

This circuit is essential for controlling motors in both forward and reverse directions by swapping two-phase connections. So, let’s get started!

Step 1: Create a New Project

First things first, open AutoCAD Electrical and create a new project. Give it a name that makes sense for your project and click OK.

Step 2: Setting Up the Busbars

Now, go to Multiple Bus settings, adjust the spacing, and choose Horizontal to create the first busbar. This will be the main power line.

Step 3: Adding Custom Wire Types

AutoCAD Electrical comes with multiple wire types, but let’s add our own:

  1. Scroll to the last column in the wire type list.

  2. Create a Red wire (Size: 16 AWG), then select the Red color.

  3. Add a Yellow wire (Size: 16 AWG) and set its color to Yellow.

  4. Add a Blue wire (Size: 16 AWG) and set its color to Blue.

  5. Click OK to save your new wire types.

After that, go to Options > Wire Type and assign these wires one by one.

Step 4: Adding Vertical Busbars

Now, go back to Multiple Bus and add Vertical Busbars to connect with the horizontal busbar. This helps structure the circuit properly.

Step 5: Placing the Components

Now, let’s add the essential electrical components:

  • MCCB (Molded Case Circuit Breaker): Protects the circuit from overloads and short circuits.

  • Contactor 1: Controls the motor in the forward direction.

  • Overload Relay (OLR): Prevents the motor from overheating.

  • Motor: This is the main load we are controlling.

  • Contactor 2: Used to reverse the motor direction by swapping two phases.

  • Three-Phase Wires (L1, L2, L3): These will be connected to the horizontal bus.

Now, connect the wiring properly according to the circuit logic.

Step 6: Wire Numbering & Cleanup

Once the wiring is done:

  1. Go to Wire Numbering and select Add Project to Process.

  2. Click OK, and you’ll see all the wire numbers automatically assigned.

  3. Adjust component attributes and clean up the diagram for a neat, professional look.

Final Thoughts

That’s it! Your Forward-Reverse Power Diagram is now complete. 🚀
