Aakash Chopra is unsure whether Hardik Pandya would move to the Mumbai Indians (MI) from the Gujarat Titans (GT) if he was not given the captaincy.
Before joining GT ahead of the IPL 2022 auction, Pandya began his IPL career with MI and spent a prosperous time there. Ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, reports indicate that the all-rounder is going back to his previous team.Chopra discussed the rumour and expressed his doubt about the Titans’ desire to release Pandya, as well as whether he would choose to play for the Mumbai Indians if he wasn’t named captain.
“There is a rumour circulating that Hardik is headed towards Mumbai. Despite being heard, there has been no confirmation. First, Gujarat, who have already won one title and advanced to the final in the last season, will release him if he is leaving. Would he be appointed captain of Mumbai if he is departing? If you are not going to be the captain, why would you go?”
Even though he expressed his opinion that the rumours could be accurate, the former India opener expressed uncertainty about whether Rohit Sharma would actually join the Titans in such a scenario, saying, “I have not heard the entire story yet. So I am waiting to see what happens, because I’m sure something will happen. There is smoke for sure that Hardik is going, but would Rohit Sharma go to GT? Is that a possibility? I am not sure.”
Chopra doesn’t see the Titans appointing an overseas skipper in the form of either Rashid Khan or Kane Williamson if Pandya moves to Mumbai. He added that the franchise would only have Shubman Gill as an Indian option for the captaincy in such a scenario.
